Hybrid BMW 1 Series spied during testing

BMW is hard at work testing out a hybrid version of its 1 Series lineup, at least according to a new set of spy shots which show a prototype 1 Series model with two “Hybrid Test Vehicle” stickers on the rear window and bumper.
According to rumors, the hatchback model will see a scaled-down version of the system already used in the 7 Series and X6 ActiveHybrid models, with the electric motor located between the engine and transmission, and a small lithium-ion battery in the rear of the car.

Set to arrive when the next generation 1 Series premieres, around 2011 or even early 2012, the model will rival things like the Lexus LF-Ch, which was shown in concept form in Frankfurt.
