Toyota’s top position threatened?

VW Toyota Ford

Is Toyota’s place as the best selling car producer in the US under threat? It seems so, because, after a few days ago the Consumer Report annual survey showed that Ford is really improving, ranking 1st, while Toyota slipped from the 1st place to the 5th in reliability, the Japanese giant is facing another threat. Volkswagen is considering lowering the price for its cars, in hope of getting a larger market share (in 10 years VW want to sell 1 million cars a year in the US).

So how exactly they plan to do that? Well, as Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen, stated they want to add more models to the company U.S. lineup and get rid of options Americans don’t care about.

“We have definitely added too many technical items that [American] customers don’t want to pay for”

Right now, for example, the Jetta starts at $17,000 while its competitor, Toyota Corolla starts at about $15,200. Another VW model, the Passat starts at $23,000 while the Toyota Camry starts at about $20,000.
